So, my Tumblr dashboard and facebook newsfeed are slowly filling up with the Harvard Dialect Quiz and Survey. I decided to procrastinate a bit and see where I fall in the grand scheme of American accents and dialects.
I wasn’t necessarily surprised at the results - I expected to have most in common with a Midwestern dialect. I was more surprised at how overwhelmingly Michigan it is…
I woke up this morning mistakenly believing that it was Wednesday. Imagine my disappointment when my excitement over being only a day away from a short flight home came to a screeching halt. Seriously *record scratch*.
This trip home is to be my last hurrah with family and Michigan friends before school is in full swing. (I will likely have time in August to make a trip home, but my usual doubling up on trips home in the summer is becoming a thing of the past.) It’s the first time I’ve seen my whole family in a little over 5 months. Sadly, it will be a short one - only 3 full days - and I have so much to cram into those 3 short days, but I am up to the challenge.
I’ve already got a few things planned - trips to stores I can’t go to here, meals with friends, a probable 5k (part of the same event as my originally scheduled 25k), a mini engagement celebration/college roomie reunion, drinking craft beers on the deck with my family, acting ridiculous with my sisters, celebrating my momma and grandma. See, lots of love and happiness - I have plenty to be excited about.
After an incredibly fun week in the UP, we are making our way back to Grand Rapids for a few more days with my family before kicking off another mini tour of the Midwest. (NYE in Chicago with my sister and her boyfriend and then Milwaukee for a few days with Rob’s sister.)
The UP was a lot of fun. I went to a Packers game (I attempted to post a picture but Tumblr ate the post - naturally), we drank beer in little bars, ate a LOT of good food, played broomball on a frozen lake, and took a sauna.
I’m pretty sure I’m finally rid of the-chest-cold-turned-pneumonia-that-would-not-go-away so I can get back to running with all of the new running clothes I acquired over Christmas. It will be good to get rid of the weight I also acquired over the holidays and while I was sick.
Most everything is in place for tomorrow’s Thanksgiving madness. (I’m counting on Chris and Rob to hold up their end of the booze bargain as there are copious amounts of food to be had and I need to be sufficiently sedated for the Lions game.)
But right now, it’s the moment before the moment, and before I dive into a day of booze, football, and food I need to go watch Michigan basketball take on Pitt at Madison Square Garden. What better way to enter a 4-day bender of food, drinking, and sports than to start with two of the aforementioned three?
